Chess Art Paintings by Elke Rehder

This is a selection of chess paintings in oil on canvas and in mixed media with watercolor on paper. Most pictures show the pawns, the most important pieces on the chess board. 

Chess has been a dominant subject in my work for many years. I'm fascinated by chess not only as a game but as a traditional fight in ritual form with all its strategy, tactics, hierarchy and symbols. If one thinks about these aspects of chess there are many different points of view. It is the outlook of an artist and not a chess players sportive view.

In my paintings only the chessmen appear in action on the chessboard. The chess-players each side of the board are not the topic of my art. Once I observed an open air game of chess in a park with people standing on the chequered squares. That was the moment I obtained the impulse of looking behind what was happening. I compare the situation of the chessmen, their position on the chess board and their strategic action with our everyday life. My chessmen become independent and play their own game.

Chess turns my attention in new directions aside from habitual ways also from the looking at reality different from the current ways and motives.

Kunst zum Schach - Malerei zum Schachspiel von Elke Rehder

Dies ist eine Auswahl von Gemälden in Öl auf Leinwand und in Mischtechnik auf Papier zum Thema Schach. Die meisten Bilder zeigen die Bauern, die wichtigsten Figuren auf dem Schachbrett.

Schach ist seit vielen Jahren ein dominantes Thema in meiner Malerei. Ich bin vom Schach nicht nur als Spiel begeistert, sondern auch vom traditionellen, ritualisierten Kampf mit all seiner Strategie, Taktik, Hierarchie und Symbolen. Wenn man an diese Aspekte des Schachs denkt, gibt es viele verschiedene Sichtweisen. Die Bilder zeigen meine Sichtweise als Künstlerin und nicht die sportlich orientierte Sehweise eines Schachspielers.

In meinen Gemälden erscheinen oft nur die Schachfiguren in ihrer Aktion auf dem Schachbrett. Die Schachspieler beiderseits des Brettes sind nicht mein Thema. Als ich einmal eine Freiluft-Partie in einem Park beobachtete, bei der die Spieler die Schachfelder betraten, war dies der Moment meiner ersten Inspiration. Ich vergleiche die Position der Schachfiguren und ihr strategisches Handeln mit unserem Alltagsleben. Meine Schachfiguren sind eigenständig und spielen ihr eigenes Spiel.

Das Schachspiel lenkt  meine Aufmerksamkeit in immer neue Richtungen abseits der üblichen Sichtweisen.
